Rebel Kicks // Interview
Written by: Mackinna Hart
Stepping down into the lower level of Bowery Electric, I was impressed with how many fans filled the space. People chatted in groups eager to hear the band, as t-shirts were handed out. This was the band’s first performance under their new name, Rebel Kicks.
It was a show intended to reflect a discovery of their true sound, and a launch into what they hope will be a successful musical career. Anthony and Steven Babino, brothers and frontmen of Rebel Kicks, brought energy and an Imagine Dragons-esque sound to the stage that had everyone in the audience dancing and feeling good from the get go. I spoke with Steven Babino briefly after the show — continue reading below to learn more about the band, who will be releasing their debut EP soon!
Q: Who are your some of your biggest influences?
A: Definitely Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors, and Young the Giant.
Q: I can hear that in your music for sure. How is it being in a band with your brother, Anthony?
A: Oh, it’s the best thing in the world. I mean, I grew up with him and when we look at each other we just know.
Q: What is one song you wish you had written?
A: There’s a few, but I guess “Here, There and Everywhere” by the Beatles is one I wish I’d written.
Q: So this was the jumping off point for Rebel Kicks. What do you see the group doing over the next five years?
A: Our biggest goal is to get out there and tour. We’d love to be opening for some bigger acts. The dream would be to open for Imagine Dragons.
