The Basement is, quite literally, a basement. Not to be confused with it’s relative, The Basement East, The Basement boasts a mere 100-ish capacity, and a close quarters feel.

Kicking off their set with a poll to figure out if the crowd thought that acoustic guitars or synthesizers were better, Cloudmouth’s vocalist / guitarist Kyle Numann had the audience laughing with jovial stage banter between band mates. This two band bill mixed genres from distant eras, yet common ground could be found in the sheer experimentalism present with each artist.

Working their way through their album Dark Energy, seeing Cloudmouth in a live setting added a haunting new level to the trio’s music. With a groovy big band type of swing to a handful of their tracks, it was easy to imagine the crowd dancing and carrying on. However, people seemed to be holding back, waiting for someone else to start dancing first, although everyone was vocal and generous when it came to cheers and applause.

Smooth transitions took up the space between songs, as the band owned the stage. “Nice Looking Mountain” ended in a fiery explosion of sound, and as Numann announced that the next song, “Don’t Make Me Watch,” was a “dancing song” the crowd finally broke loose and started moving to the rhythm. Cloudmouth’s live performance is something else — no fancy lights or high tech effects — just straightforward passion and drive.

Basic Printer took the stage next to “push a buncha buttons and make you feel all kinds of things.,” according to Numann. Jesse Gillenwalters’ fronts Basic Printer, whose live line up varies in size from show to show. Tonight, both bands were three pieces. While the 3-D glasses donned by a member of Basic Printer added to the groups overall style, experimental electronic pop rang out through the tiny venue. Foot stomping and hip swaying melodies took over the show went on. People were finally feeling comfortable enough to dance around — “Hard Look” was a sure fire hit as Basic Printer’s authentic stage presence is hard to miss.

Neither artist is afraid to take risks, and both are severely underrated in the local scene. If you’re in the area, come out to see them next time — you’ll be dancing the night away in no time!
