Venue: The Waypost
City: Portland, Oregon
Date: January 18, 2019
We recently had the chance to experience punk rock’s own variety show hosted by Luke Schwartz (Tigers Jaw, Make Do and Mend) while in Portland, Oregon. The surprisingly early event had doors at 4 and was an evening filled with music, stories, and plenty of laughter.
The show started with Luke taking the tiny stage at The Waypost and giving a brief rundown of how the show was going to go. We started off with an acoustic performance by Warm Thoughts (Elliot Babin, also of Touche Amore). While the set was short, hearing stripped down versions of tracks from last years I Went Swimming Alone was a breath of fresh air.
Jon Simmons, of the soon to be inactive Balance and Composure, took the stage next and got the rooms full attention immediately. The intimate crowd quietly sang along to “Stonehands” from 2011’s Separation. Simmons briefly spoke about Balance and Composure coming to an end. If you’re able to catch one of the last Balance and Composure shows, do yourself a favor and send them off the way they deserve.
To end the night, Luke once again took the stage with Elliot, Jon, and Jeremy Bolm (Touche Amore) and spent the next hour telling stories of their time in bands. While we won’t spoil any of the stories with specifics, there were stories of how each of the artists met, surviving touring in Europe, van flips, and some unfortunate run-ins with roaches.
You’ll be seeing these events pop up more frequently, and we can not stress enough how enjoyable the night was. The music was great and the stories were even better. Huge shoutout to Luke for letting us shoot the show and putting on such a wonderful night.
