Pedro The Lion Performs at The Basement East
Venue: The Basement East
City: Nashville, TN
Date: August 23
Pedro The Lion and mewithoutYou brought their co-headlining tour to Music City on August 23. While the show had originally been scheduled at Cannery Ballroom, it was moved to The Basement East a few weeks beforehand. With a more intimate venue, the crowd got nice and cozy for a night of nostalgia.
mewithoutYou took the stage to a packed house - fans continued to trickle in as their set kicked off. Vocalist Aaron Weiss led the band through an vast exploration of their discography, kicking the set off with “Pale Horse,” from their 2015 album Pale Horses. Surprisingly, this show drew a calm crowd which was a stark contrast to the energy that the band brought to the stage.
mewithoutYou prove to be versatile both on and off the record. Their ability to flex into seemingly different eras during their live performance shows that, while they’ve transformed their sound since their early days, they’re still the same band at heart. To close out their set, mewithoutYou treated the crowd to a blast from the past — “Timothy Hay” from way back in 2009.
Pedro The Lion took the stage next. Backed by a screen showing pinks, blues, and yellows, Pedro The Lion played their first Nashville show sine early 2018. David Bazan’s cool and calm vocals filled the venue as the band drifted through a notable set list. With the tour being in support of Phoenix, Pedro The Lion’s first album in 15 years, they worked through the first three tracks of the album (“Sunrise,” “Yellow Bike,” and “Clean Up”) before transitioning to older material.
After a lengthy writing hiatus, Phoenix comes with thoughtful lyrics and a cohesive listening quality. David Bazan seems to be a natural performer, owning the stage and holding the crowds attention by his rich, steady voice alone. With the Pedro The Lion now having new material out, perhaps this will mean more tour dates in the near future!
